Mark making

An example of the healthy practice of intuitive mark making; making loose and expressive marks on paper without thinking about them before hand. No planning and no concern for composition. From time to time I sit down with a stack of paper, a brush and some ink, quickly working till one of the ingredients runs out. Some of the images begin to make sense after a month or so. I can look at them later and recognize concerns and events from that moment in life. This practice also gives the artist a wider range of shapes and forms to work with.

Study for upcomming zinc plate etching

Sketch of a tree, Mt.Tabor, Portland

First etching, #3/4

The sketches I made were good, so why not use them directly... Here I traced my drawings into Plexiglas using a sharp point. Thick ink was applied to the entire surface and then rubbed off, leaving ink in the groves. Paper was placed over the plate and cranked through a printing press. The airplane is a Ryan M-1, and was traced from a photo by Xavier Meal.

Self portrait sketches.

These are studies done in preparation for a printmaking assignment. The final image I choose will be etched into Plexiglas and printed on a printing press. Since I generally like my sketches, and others seem to as well, the final may be composed of multiple studies like the ones pictured here.
